Contains 4 compact discs\Nine year-old Bruno knows nothing of the Final Solution or the Holocaust. He is oblivious to the appalling cruelties being inflicted on the people of Europe by his country.\All he knows is that he has been moved from a comfortable home in Berlin to a house in a desolate area where there is nothing to do and no one to play with. Until he meets Shmuel, a boy who lives a strange parallel existence on the other side of the adjoining wire fence and who, like the other people there, wears a uniform of striped pyjamas.\Bruno's friendship with Shmuel will take him from innocence to revelation. And in exploring what he is unwittingly a part of, he will inevitably become subsumed by the terrible process.

The first section of the book addresses the learning and teaching of grammar, setting the stage for subsequent sections. The purpose behind the article on how language is learned is to help readers understand that babies and preschoolers acquire the grammar of their language without direct instruction and that language continues to develop indirectly during children's school years. Connie's article on teaching grammar in the context of writing articulates other aspects of the rationale that underlies this book: teaching grammar in the context of its use. The second and major section deals with teaching grammar through writing, across the grades. The authors address punctuation, parts of speech, effective word choice and syntax, and conferencing with students to teach revision and editing. The next section focuses on style, with emphasis on sentence composing, "image grammar," and "breaking the rules" for stylistic effect. There is also a discussion of the power of dialects and the dialects of power. The last section deals with teaching the English language and its grammar to ESL students in kindergarten through college. The section and book conclude with an article on using grammar checking computer software.

6.	The Grizzly Mother: An engaging look at how the animals, people, and seasons within an ecosystem are intertwined. To the Gitxsan people of Northwestern British Columbia, the grizzly is an integral part of the natural landscape. Together, they share the land and forests that the Skeena River runs through, as well as the sockeye salmon within it. Follow mother bear as she teaches her cubs what they need to survive on their own.

6 copies. One summer morning, a huge elephant seal swam into a busy harbour. He was looking for a sheltered beach. Soon he found just the right place. He heaved himself up onto the sand, and flopped down in the sun by a sea wall. Then he closed his eyes and went to sleep. Soon cars and people crowed all the nearby streets, causing major traffic jams, just to see the seal. Most people just stood and looked at the seal but some poked him with sticks and threw things. Will Jupiter the elephant seal be safe on this crowed beach?

6 copies. Word Count 116\From the Author\My first step in creating my books was to make my characters. I used Fimo clay to build each animal and I chose Canadian animals to link to our Science curriculum. After I made the animals, I took them out into the forests and beyond to photograph them and create little stories.\I am focusing on beginning reading because, as a teacher, I was always searching for engaging, and inspiring little books for my students and they were sometimes hard to find at the early levels.\I have also written several non-fiction books as a part of the Foxy and Friends Books collection. In my experience of working with children who struggled with learning to read, I often found non-fiction books to be the ‘hook’ needed to engage these readers. I wanted to create books that would motivate children to ask questions and read more.\In creating my books, I want to emphasize the importance of oral language and storytelling. My hope is that children will want to play in nature, create stories of their own, and find joy in learning.
Also use with KIT 599.00/002 Animals Kit.
